Fiberboard, in all its densities, is made from wood fibers. Those would be little tiny pieces of hardwood or softwood. Mix these with some resin and wax, then heat it up and press it together, and you get fiberboard.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is one of the most versatile building material. Because it’s inexpensive and fairly durable, medium density fiberboard is a good choice for practical projects like shelving and storage cabinets. But MDF wood is great for decorative projects too. The smooth surface of medium density fiberboard is perfect for painting, and a router leaves crisp profiles with no splintering, burning or tear-out

There is also such a thing as high density fiberboard (HDF),To make HDF, more heat and pressure is required than with the other fiberboards, but adhesives are usually not required. Hardboard is quite strong, but can also be an expensive material.

Advantage

• It's inexpensive to make so you will pay less for it in the store than for plywood or some solid wood pieces.

• Fiberboard does not have knots that can blemish the surface of a piece or make components difficult to attach. As far as the looks are concerned, fiberboard can be coated with laminates.

• Shaping Fiberboard is easier than shaping solid wood, making it easier to do more elaborate designs.

• It can be painted or stained and given a look just the same as real wood. So, it can replace the place of wood furniture.

Disadvantage

• Fiberboard will soak up water and other liquids like a sponge and swell unless it’s very well sealed on all sides and edges.

• Fiberboard can crack or split under extreme stress

• Fiberboard consists of such fine particles, MDF doesn’t hold screws very well. During nailing, the fraction may appear around it. Pilot holes should be used while screwing.

• If you chip it or crack it, you cannot repair or cover the damage easily as you typically can with solid wood.
