Chipboard is an engineered wood product made from waste products like wood chips, sawdust, and wood shavings.

Advantages:

• Low cost: The affordable cost of the particle board is the main advantage over other boards such as solid wood and other plywood.

• Smooth surface: It provides smooth and flat surface for sticking decorative laminates or wood veneer. This particle board is stronger and aesthetically attractive. Thus laminated particle board and veneered particle boards are now used in mass production of office furniture.

Disadvantages:

• Low moisture resistant: Chipboard is susceptible to damage and warping from exposure to water. Make sure it's been sealed, and keep it away from moist environments.

• Low strength: It cannot support heavy loads as it is weak in strength.

• Sensitive material: Working with particle board without skill or experience can easily lead to your project turning out as a shabby job. Proper accessories are required to install chipboard furniture.

Solutions:

• Moisture resistant: A MUF grade or V313 grade chipboard has been added on some chemical which can resolve chipboard low moisture resistant problem. This two grade of boards are strongly recommended ,especially for a high humidity country like Malaysia.

• Accessories: The strength of chipboard can be added by using appropriate accessories. This is the main reason why some of the high end furniture they are using chipboard and their products are durable.

• Appropriate dealing way: In the market, people have the mindset of board furniture are lower quality products which are not durable. It is because lots of carpenter using inappropriate way to produce board furniture in the past. A good machine, edge banding and accessories are needed to produce board furniture. Carpenter should use the proper method to deal with chipboard.
